Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has clarified that Marcus Rashford’s recent behavior is not indicative of any disrespect towards him.
Rashford made headlines after being seen on a night out in Belfast shortly before missing a scheduled training session due to illness.
This conduct drew criticism from football fans, leading to Rashford being excluded from United’s 4-2 FA Cup victory against Newport on Sunday, January 28.
A day later, the Premier League powerhouse issued a statement revealing that the 26-year-old underwent an internal disciplinary process, acknowledging and taking responsibility for his actions.
Rashford has now resumed training and is eligible for selection for their upcoming away match against Wolves on Thursday, February 1.
Reports indicate that the forward has been fined approximately two weeks’ wages, amounting to around £700,000.
Ten Hag addressed the situation as “case closed” during his pre-match press conference, responding to inquiries about whether Rashford’s controversial behavior might signify a lack of respect for him, a notion he refuted.
“It’s unrelated to that; let’s concentrate on the game and move forward,” stated the 53-year-old. He further remarked, “The statement is straightforward, and our emphasis should be on winning football matches. Discipline is essential in football, both on the field and off it.
“There exists a boundary that every player, every professional is aware of in terms of expectations. Our primary focus should be on securing victories in football games, as that is of utmost importance. Every top professional understands the standards required,” he continued.
The club is undoubtedly troubled by his off-field problems, especially given Rashford’s notable decline in form this season, having scored just four goals in 26 appearances. Rashford’s subpar performance may lead to him being excluded from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad this summer.
