Baker Mayfield heading to the New England Patriots?

With the New England Patriots seeking a new starting quarterback, a notable NFL insider suggests that Baker Mayfield, the former No. 1 overall draft pick, could be a consideration in free agency.

In what promises to be a pivotal offseason for the New England Patriots, owner Robert Kraft’s decision to part ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick in January marks a significant shift. Armed with ample financial resources, a high pick in April’s draft, and a new head coach in Jerod Mayo, the Patriots are poised for a transformative period.

In the coming months, the focus will be on reshaping the culture and assembling a competitive team for the 2024 season. Central to this endeavor is securing a sustainable, long-term solution at quarterback. While there’s speculation about the possibility of drafting a top quarterback prospect this spring, the organization is also considering the free-agent route.

The New England Patriots’ front office possesses distinct connections to Baker Mayfield.

Despite the possibility of using their salary cap space to pursue Kirk Cousins, the top quarterback available in the market, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler recently suggested an alternative approach for the New England Patriots.

“While Tampa Bay appears to be the frontrunner to retain Baker Mayfield, who has become a sought-after free agent following an impressive season with the Buccaneers, the landscape of free agency remains unpredictable. The Patriots’ new leadership team, featuring key personnel figures such as Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith, both of whom were part of the Cleveland organization that drafted Mayfield as the No. 1 pick in 2018, adds an intriguing dimension to the situation,” Fowler stated.

“They had faith in him. Sure, the Patriots could opt for a quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick. But there’s a possibility they might still seek a seasoned veteran. Alternatively, if they see Mayfield as a viable long-term solution, they could target Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. in the draft or explore trading back for additional assets.”

Mayfield experienced a standout season in 2023-24 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has expressed his desire to stay with the team. Nevertheless, circumstances can shift rapidly during contract negotiations, especially when significant deals are involved.
