Patriots free agent anticipated to explore options in the market…

Kendrick Bourne has expressed his interest in rejoining the New England Patriots as a free agent this offseason, but as of now, there is no imminent agreement between the two parties.

According to a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the wide receiver is expected to explore other options when free agency begins in mid-March. Despite ending the 2023 season on injured reserve due to a torn ACL, it is anticipated that Bourne will attract significant interest from potential suitors.

Turning 29 in August, Bourne had a productive season before his injury setback. In the Patriots’ first eight games, he emerged as a key target, recording 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns, leading the team in catches during that span. Despite the team’s offensive struggles throughout the year, Bourne remained one of the few consistent contributors.

Despite the extensive changes occurring throughout the organization due to the Patriots’ challenging 4-13 season, Bourne has been vocal about his intentions: he envisions himself re-signing with New England.

Earlier this month, Bourne openly expressed his sentiments, stating, “Throughout all my years, they’ve played a significant role in my personal and professional growth. Emotionally, mentally, as a football player, they’ve helped elevate me to another level, and I want to continue that trajectory.”

He emphasized the unique environment within the Patriots organization, which he believes fosters his development both as an individual and as an athlete. Bourne expressed a desire to maintain the momentum he had built, citing his belief that he was reaching the pinnacle of his career.

Despite his injury setback, he feels there is unfinished business and is eager to replicate his success from the previous seasons.

Originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the San Francisco 49ers, Bourne joined the New England Patriots in 2021 through a three-year free agency deal. He quickly made an impact, establishing himself as one of the team’s most dependable players and forming a strong connection with rookie quarterback Mac Jones.

However, Bourne struggled to maintain his performance in 2022 under a new offensive coaching staff led by Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

It wasn’t until the 2023 season, with another change at offensive coordinator — Bill O’Brien was brought in last offseason to rejuvenate the unit — that Bourne returned to his previous levels of play in New England.

Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a torn ACL suffered in October, ending what had been another promising campaign. Nevertheless, there’s optimism regarding his recovery, and expectations are that he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season in September.

As for which team he’ll be playing for at that point, that remains uncertain.
