JUST IN: Serena Williams’ former coach faults Emma Raducanu…

Serena Williams‘ former coach, Rennae Stubbs, along with Andrea Petkovic, have praised Jannik Sinner’s choice to turn down an offer to attend the 2024 Sanremo Music Festival.

Sinner has had a phenomenal start to 2024, securing his first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open, claiming the ATP 500 title in Rotterdam, and reaching a career-best ranking of World No. 3. However, despite his recent successes, the 22-year-old stirred up controversy by declining an invitation to the Sanremo Music Festival, held from February 6-10, opting instead to focus on training for his upcoming campaign in Rotterdam.

In the most recent installment of the ‘Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast,’ Andrea Petkovic discussed the significance of the occasion and the criticism directed at Jannik Sinner for rejecting the invitation. Nonetheless, she emphasized that Sinner’s choice was justified by his subsequent victory in Rotterdam.

Being invited to the Sanremo Music Festival is a significant honor, not just for artists but for anyone. Jannik declined the invitation as he needed to focus on training for Rotterdam. This sparked controversy as some questioned his decision not to attend and honor the invitation.

I personally would have accepted the invitation and gone to Sanremo, perhaps that’s why I never secured Major victories. Nevertheless, I truly admire Sinner’s decision, and witnessing his victory in Rotterdam affirmed that he made the correct choice.

Stubbs, on the other hand, praised Sinner’s evident focus on his priorities, highlighting the difference between his approach and that of Matteo Berrettini and Emma Raducanu, who have faced criticism for their numerous off-court commitments. She recommended that they consider surrounding themselves with individuals who would support them in reevaluating their priorities.

The one criticism I have of Matteo Berrettini, for instance, is that despite his undeniable talent and charm, he has been sidetracked by extracurricular activities. Let’s be honest here on this podcast—I admire Matteo, he’s a fantastic individual. He’s handsome and possesses all the qualities we admire. He’s also a phenomenal tennis player. However, even during his peak performance periods, he was frequently seen attending events like the Met Gala and participating in photoshoots, despite battling significant injuries in recent years.

“And that’s acceptable because Jannik has his Gucci commitments, and Matteo has his Hugo Boss engagements. However, this might be where there’s some room for criticism. I’m aware that Emma Raducanu has faced criticism for similar reasons. This underscores the importance of having a supportive circle of advisors who can help you prioritize what truly matters.”

“We frequently discuss things, and Jannik Sinner is providing me with valuable assistance.” – Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini, who has faced multiple injury setbacks in the past two years, has observed from the sidelines as Jannik Sinner has elevated Italian tennis to unprecedented levels.

Berrettini recently spoke highly of his fellow countryman, highlighting his remarkable achievements at just 22 years old. He also mentioned that he maintains regular communication with Sinner and appreciates the support he receives from the current World No. 3.

“I’ve always held Jannik Sinner in high regard. The first time I played against him in Monte Carlo, I immediately recognized his exceptional talent. It’s both surprising and expected to see his success,” Berrettini commented.

“He’s achieving remarkable feats. We communicate frequently, and his support has been invaluable to me. Even the Davis Cup has had a positive impact. In tennis, we motivate each other. When I see an Italian training alongside me and performing well, it inspires me to strive for greatness as well,” he further explained.
