The Michigan football program has officially brought on Sean Magee from the Chicago Bears to serve as U-M’s general manager and senior associate athletic director, as per information obtained by The Michigan Insider.
Magee’s hiring was initially reported by 247Sports last month.
Previously serving as Chief of Staff for the Bears since 2022, Magee has a history with Michigan, having worked under Jim Harbaugh as Associate Athletic Director for Football. During his five-year tenure at Michigan, Magee oversaw various off-field aspects of the football program, including football operations, player personnel, player development, and human resources functions, as well as serving as a liaison to the Athletic Director and Senior Leadership Team.
The role of Football General Manager entails directing all aspects of recruiting prospective student-athletes to the University of Michigan Football program, as well as leading Michigan Football’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) activities. Responsibilities include collaborating with the Head Football Coach and recruiting personnel staff, managing the current roster of student-athletes, organizing on-campus recruiting visits, identifying collegiate student-athletes in the NCAA transfer portal, building relationships with recruits and their families, managing high school coach contacts, overseeing summer football camps, acting as a liaison to NFL scouts, managing the recruiting budget, and executing short and long-term goals related to NIL activities.
Prior to his time at Michigan, Magee played football at the Navy and worked as Director of Player Personnel. His hiring marks another significant change for Michigan football following its national championship-winning season, with Jim Harbaugh departing for the Los Angeles Chargers and several assistants, including defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh, defensive line coach Mike Elston, and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale, moving to the NFL.
Michigan has since promoted Sherrone Moore to head coach and brought on Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator, along with hiring Steve Casula as tight ends coach, as part of its rebuilding efforts.
