On Saturday, Michigan wide receiver Karmello English announced his decision to enter the Transfer Portal. Despite being absent from the Wolverines’ spring roster, which was unveiled earlier in the day, the rising sophomore expressed gratitude for his time with the team and appreciation for his coaches, teammates, Michigan fans, and support staff.
In a social media post, English thanked Coach Harbaugh, Coach Moore, and Coach Bellamy for their belief in his abilities at UM. Following careful consideration, he revealed his intention to enter the transfer portal on April 16th. During the 2023 season, English participated in six games at wide receiver, notably scoring his first collegiate touchdown with a four-yard catch against Indiana.
Originally a four-star recruit in the class of 2023, English opted for the Wolverines over offers from Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, and Jackson State. According to the scouting report by 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Cooper Petagna, English stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs over 175 pounds, possessing an athletic build with a strong lower body.
While he has the potential to add more weight to his frame at the next level, he demonstrates above-average athletic ability as a receiver. English is capable of lining up both inside and out, although he primarily operates in the slot position.
He exhibits above-average quickness in short areas and displays the agility to change direction effectively. Despite some minor stiffness in his hips and ankles that can affect his separation ability, English compensates with his ability to play with physicality and utilize his frame effectively.
Demonstrates satisfactory to above-average speed on the field. Excels in utilizing physicality and explosiveness when contesting catches. Displays impressive skills in 50/50 situations. Exhibits some productivity after making catches, often focusing on shorter to intermediate routes while showcasing possession abilities.
Plays with a larger presence than his physical stature suggests and brings a competitive edge to his style of play. Possesses the capability to contribute effectively to various special teams units at the next level. Expected to become a multi-year starter at a Power Five program.
The decision to transfer will further strain Michigan’s already limited receiving group, as the Wolverines face the task of filling the void left by their top receivers, Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson.
