John Sterling, the primary announcer for the New York Yankees, hinted at possibly retiring during an upcoming press conference, as reported by multiple sources.
Although Sterling mentioned his plans to The Athletic, he did not confirm the retirement rumors. According to the publication, both Yankees officials and WFAN staff believe that Sterling, aged 85, is likely to retire due to health concerns.
“We are going to have a press conference to do everything on Friday,” Sterling stated, with his next game to announce being the Friday game at Yankee Stadium against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Should he choose to retire, The Athletic notes that Sterling would step down immediately, with Justin Shackil, 37, and Emmanuel Berbari, 24, poised to succeed him. Sterling has been the voice of Yankees games since 1989.
