The initial round of this weekend’s NFL Draft lacked much excitement, except for one notable moment courtesy of the Atlanta Falcons. Despite recently signing Kirk Cousins to a massive contract, the Falcons caused widespread confusion by selecting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
with their first-round pick, the 8th overall selection. This unexpected move raised eyebrows and invited criticism, but it turns out the Falcons weren’t alone in considering Penix for a first-round pick. Reportedly, the Las Vegas Raiders also expressed interest in the talented quarterback from Washington, as per NFL reporter James Palmer.
On one hand, the Falcons possibly simplified the Raiders’ decision-making process, sparing them from becoming the subject of first-round ridicule. However, the Raiders hadn’t just invested a significant sum like the Falcons had, making it more reasonable for them to let Penix develop behind Gardner Minshew for a year, rather than waiting for several seasons behind Cousins.
Nevertheless, the Raiders adjusted their strategy and opted for standout Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who is expected to contribute immediately. Whether he fills the role of tight end or wide receiver remains uncertain, but he’ll certainly find a place on the field. Importantly, the Raiders avoided any uncomfortable situations of their general manager having to justify the decision to the owner, making it a mutually beneficial outcome for Las Vegas on Thursday night.
