Earlier this week, the Magpies disclosed that De Goey has been dealing with a groin problem, while Mitchell has been experiencing discomfort from a foot issue since the beginning of the season.
Both players underwent assessment at the outset of the club’s Round 8 preparations, but unfortunately, neither has been cleared to play against the Blues this week.
Collingwood coach Craig McRae confirmed the setback on Wednesday morning, stating, “Unfortunately Jordy won’t play; he’s dealing with tight groins. We’ll need to manage him carefully and hopefully, he’ll be available next week.”
He added, “Tom also won’t be playing. He’s been troubled by plantar fasciitis for about a month now. We’re implementing strategies to improve his fitness, and hopefully, he’ll be back on the field within a week or two. He’s been struggling with it, and despite our efforts to get him ready, he couldn’t complete today’s session.”
The recent changes in the lineup have created an opportunity for pre-season recruit Lachie Sullivan to make his debut. Sullivan, who arrived from Footscray as a two-time Team of the Year player at the state league level, has seamlessly transitioned into the VFL.
In the early stages of the season, Sullivan has been impressive, averaging 26.0 disposals, 5.3 clearances, and 4.5 tackles per game for Collingwood’s reserves. He has formed a strong partnership with fourth-year Magpie Finlay Macrae under the guidance of VFL coach Josh Fraser.
The club has confirmed that Sullivan will make his debut on Friday night, with the match expected to draw a crowd of over 90,000 fans.
Macrae’s performance has fluctuated, with strong showings in the VFL but challenges making an impact against top-tier opponents. Despite this, he remains one of the VFL’s top performers for disposals and tackles this season.
The Magpies are considering bringing back defender Oleg Markov, which could allow Jack Crisp to play more centrally.
“We’ll have to assess our options,” McRae commented on the possibility of promoting young midfielders to replace De Goey and Mitchell. “We’re aware of the challenge posed by a strong stoppage team. They possess experience and physical presence.”
This situation presents opportunities for others, with McRae noting Oleg Markov’s impressive form in the VFL.
“Lachie Sullivan is definitely in contention; he’s an inside midfielder who has been putting in the effort to earn his chance,” stated the coach.
“Fin Macrae has been performing well in the VFL, showcasing his strength in the midfield. Harvey Harrison also impressed as a substitute in the match against Essendon.”
Collingwood will announce their 23-man lineup at 6:20 pm (AEST) on Thursday ahead of the highly anticipated clash against Carlton on Friday.
