Milwaukee Bucks: 4 Potential Backup Options for Damian Lillard to Sign in NBA Free Agency…

Damian Lillard

The Milwaukee Bucks brought in Patrick Beverley during the offseason to help alleviate the backcourt load on Damian Lillard. However, Beverley isn’t your typical point guard, and with the feisty veteran possibly leaving in NBA free agency this summer, the Bucks face a significant dilemma heading into the new season. The good news for Milwaukee is that there are numerous options on the market as they seek a legitimate backup for Damian Lillard for the 2024-25 season.

Keith Smith of Spotrac provided an in-depth analysis of the Bucks’ financial situation heading into the offseason, including their limited budget for signing new players via free agency.

Simply put, Milwaukee’s salary cap constraints will prevent them from signing a big name in free agency. However, there are several viable options for the squad:

“The Bucks could use a real backup point guard. The same principle applies of not putting too much on Lillard in the regular season. Beverly can sort of fill that role, but he’s not a ballhandler or playmaker. Aaron Holiday, Dennis Smith Jr., Delon Wright or Jordan McLaughlin would all be good options,” Smith wrote.

Regardless of whether Beverley leaves or not, it would still be in the Bucks’ best interest to bring in another point guard to fill the playmaking void whenever Lillard is on the bench or sidelined with an injury.

Aaron Holiday, who played for the Houston Rockets this past season, is an intriguing prospect. Beyond his skills, the 27-year-old is also the younger brother of beloved former Buck Jrue Holiday.

The Milwaukee faithful still miss Jrue, so bringing his younger brother into the mix could be a consolation for them. Plus, Aaron is a capable playmaker and ballhandler, which fits well within the Bucks’ financial constraints.
