The New York Giants’ defensive lineup is solid overall, but the depth at the interior of their defensive line remains a question mark. While Dexter Lawrence stands out as a top-tier interior defender, uncertainty looms over who will complement him in the starting lineup.

The New York Giants’ shortage of defensive line depth presents a unique chance for unexpected players to secure spots on the roster. A prime candidate among these underdogs is rookie undrafted free agent Elijah Chatman.

Is there a possibility that Elijah Chatman could earn a spot on the Giants’ roster?

NCAA-Football-Tulane-at-Southern-Methodist-16999174 A hidden talent among the Giants' undrafted free agents might secure a spot on the roster.

Chatman seems to be one of those undrafted rookies who exceeds initial expectations. Originally attending the Giants’ rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, the SMU product impressed enough to earn a spot on the roster.

At 6 feet tall and weighing 278 pounds, Chatman is smaller than typical players at his position. However, his smaller stature is balanced by remarkable athleticism. He showcases a rapid initial burst and demonstrates significant explosiveness both off the line of scrimmage and in strength training sessions.

Despite his size limitations, Chatman proved to be a valuable player for SMU’s defense. His breakout came during his junior year in 2021, where he recorded 40 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He continued his productive performance with 39 tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks as a senior in 2022. Transitioning to a graduate assistant role in 2023, Chatman contributed 33 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks, culminating in a successful collegiate career that included the second-highest number of games played in SMU history with 60. He received recognition as second-team All-AAC in both 2021 and 2022.

The Giants have been highlighted as the most improved team this offseason, particularly with their underrated new pass-rush duo. Looking ahead to 2024, there is speculation about the potential trade of a veteran receiver.

Given the Giants’ need for additional interior depth, Chatman appears to be a suitable candidate. Throughout the summer, he will have the opportunity to learn from one of the NFL’s top defensive line coaches, Andre Patterson. With Patterson’s guidance refining Chatman’s exceptional explosiveness, the undrafted rookie could seize an opportunity to earn a spot on the Giants’ roster, bolstering their defensive interior.
