JUST IN: Injury Takes Potential SF Giants Trade Target Off the Market.

The SF Giants have been eyeing shortstop Bo Bichette for a potential trade, but his recent calf injury, which will sideline him for “multiple weeks,” complicates any possible deal. With Bichette set to be on the injured list through the July 30th trade deadline, it is unlikely the Giants can finalize a trade for him.

Bichette’s injury further diminishes his trade value, especially given the Blue Jays’ struggles this season, which might have otherwise made them more willing to trade him. Bichette’s performance has also declined significantly this year. After a stellar 2023 where he was an All-Star with a .306/.339/.475 line, he has struggled in 2024, hitting .223/.276/.321 with 4 home runs and 30 RBI.

Even if he were healthy, trading for Bichette would have been risky for the Giants. They would have needed to part with numerous prospects for a player who might be on the decline—a situation reminiscent of Tim Anderson’s rapid fall from All-Star to struggling player.

Currently, the Giants are using a platoon approach at shortstop with Brett Wisely and Tyler Fitzgerald. This strategy has been effective, as both players have contributed well defensively and offensively.

Given their current performance, the Giants might be better off targeting a free agent like Ha-Seong Kim in the offseason rather than making a high-risk trade for Bichette. Bichette’s injury might be a blessing in disguise, preventing the Giants from making a hasty decision and preserving their key prospects. For now, sticking with Wisely and Fitzgerald seems to be a prudent choice.
