Breaking News: Diamondbacks Stun with Trade: Marlins’ Selling Spree Rolls On

The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially acquired left-handed reliever A.J. Puk from the Miami Marlins, as confirmed on Thursday.

Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the trade.

In exchange, the Diamondbacks have sent two prospects to the Marlins: infielder Deyvison De Los Santos and center fielder Andrew Pintar.

Puk, who has made 32 appearances and pitched 44 innings for the Marlins, holds a 4.30 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP this season. Standing 6-foot-7, the 29-year-old began his career with the Oakland Athletics, where he played for three seasons before joining Miami for the past two years. Puk was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft by Oakland.

Puk’s addition bolsters the Diamondbacks’ bullpen with another left-handed option, joining Joe Mantiply. Arizona had been seeking relief help, particularly from left-handed pitchers, as the trade deadline approached. The Diamondbacks, who have a 28-18 record since early June and are solidly in the wild card hunt, have positioned themselves as buyers this deadline. Conversely, the Marlins, having traded Luis Arraez to the Padres in May, have signaled their intent to sell.

Puk is under contract with the Diamondbacks through the 2026 season.

In the minor leagues, Deyvison De Los Santos has been a standout, hitting 14 home runs and driving in 37 runs in just 38 Double-A games before being promoted to Triple-A, where he’s continued his impressive performance with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs in 49 games and an OPS of .926. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the Diamondbacks’ 14th best prospect.

Andrew Pintar has also made a mark, posting an .852 OPS across three minor league organizations this year. MLB Pipeline lists him as the 30th prospect in the Diamondbacks’ system.

To accommodate Puk on the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks designated relief pitcher Joe Jacques for assignment. Jacques, who was claimed off waivers in late April, primarily pitched in Triple-A Reno with a 3.63 ERA over 22.1 innings and 19 appearances.
