The Rams’ secondary took a hit at the start of training camp when cornerback Derion Kendrick tore his ACL during Wednesday’s opening practice.

Head coach Sean McVay confirmed the injury after Thursday’s practice. Kendrick was hurt in a seemingly routine collision with receiver Tyler Johnson at the line of scrimmage. Though he limped off the field, he managed to walk to the other side unaided.

Unfortunately, Kendrick’s season is likely over, and the Rams will need to schedule surgery in the coming weeks.

McVay expressed his pride in Kendrick’s progress and maturity, stating, “He’s shown he can handle setbacks.”

Kendrick, a sixth-round draft pick in 2022, was set to compete for a depth role in the Rams’ secondary following the acquisition of veterans Tre’Davious White and Darious Williams.

White, a former All-Pro, and Williams, who was part of the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI team before joining Jacksonville, were brought in to strengthen the defense. However, White is still recovering from an Achilles injury and is being managed cautiously, while Williams injured his hamstring during practice.

This situation places increased pressure on the younger cornerbacks, especially after Kendrick’s injury. McVay has been pleased with their performance and mental preparation so far, noting the improvement of third-year corner Decobie Durant, who made a notable defensive play on Thursday.

The remaining options include Tre Tomlinson, who had promising moments last year but missed part of the offseason, Shaun Jolly, who played primarily on special teams last season, and undrafted free agents Josh Wallace from Michigan and Charles Woods from SMU, who could potentially vie for roster spots.

McVay hasn’t ruled out the option of adding another cornerback to the roster before the season begins.

“We have some depth at the moment,” McVay said. “However, when depth becomes an issue, it means other players have to shoulder more responsibility, which can lead to increased workloads that need to be managed carefully.”

One potential addition could be Ahkello Witherspoon, who started every game for the Rams last season and is still available as a free agent.

“I wouldn’t rule it out,” McVay mentioned. “I enjoyed working with Ahkello last year, so bringing him back is definitely a consideration.”
