“I just don’t think it’s feasible,” Luke Maile said. “It would be unfair to the other guys in the clubhouse, as I’m not sure you can effectively manage both roles today. But it’s definitely an intriguing concept.”

At 33, Maile is a Northern Kentucky native who has spent the last two seasons with his hometown Reds during his nine-year Major League career.

He has considered the possibility of managing in the future.

“It’s something I’ve thought about down the line,” he shared. “I’ve always aimed to still be catching at 40. That’s been my goal since I was drafted. Managing feels like it’s a long way off, but who knows what could happen? Life changes quickly. I have a family now with three kids, and my wife has been incredibly supportive throughout my playing career, which feels like it’s gone on forever.”
