Fremantle has expressed interest in acquiring Richmond star Liam Baker, despite strong connections to cross-town rivals West Coast.

Baker has been frequently linked to a move back to his home state of Western Australia, where he could join teammate Jack Graham, who recently signed with the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent.

However, a surprising pick swap between Carlton and Hawthorn that resulted in the Blues obtaining Pick 14 has complicated a potential trade for Tom Barrass, which was expected to be key in a deal that would send Baker to Richmond.

With the Eagles reconsidering their offer for the two-time premiership player, Fremantle’s EGM of Football, Joe Brierty, indicated this may create an opportunity for the Dockers.

“Friday’s pick swap has potentially opened the door, and we’ll explore what that means and have those discussions,” Brierty told AFL Trade Radio. “We’ve had ongoing conversations with Liam over time, even during his last contract with Richmond. Our understanding is he still wants to join West Coast, and we respect that.”

Brierty added that if the chance arises, Fremantle believes they have the assets to meet Richmond’s needs and facilitate Baker’s move.

Additionally, Fremantle is also keen on Baker’s teammate Shai Bolton, offering Picks 10, 11, and 18 for both players. “We recognize Shai’s talent and the current situation, and we believe our offer is strong,” Brierty noted.

While the club is hopeful, they aim to remain responsible and balanced in their approach as negotiations continue. Meanwhile, the Eagles are also reportedly in the running for out-of-contract Carlton forward Matt Owies.
