Port Adelaide‘s newest addition, Joe Richards, has opened up about the uncertainties he faced regarding his AFL career at the end of last season before joining the Power. He revealed that comments from former coach Craig McRae nearly convinced him to stay with Collingwood.
In an interview with Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary, Richards admitted, “I reached the end of last year unsure about my future in football, and doubts began to creep in. But the last 12 months have turned out really well.”
The 24-year-old forward was part of a complicated three-team trade during the AFL Trade Period, which also involved Collingwood and Gold Coast. This deal brought Richards, Jack Lukosius, and Rory Atkins to Port Adelaide, while Dan Houston went to Collingwood and John Noble moved to the Suns.
Richards had a strong start at Collingwood, earning praise from fans and the club during his nine AFL appearances and standout VFL performances. He was awarded the Harry Collier Trophy as Collingwood’s best young player, with McRae highlighting his intelligence and potential.
Reflecting on McRae’s praise during the Magpies’ Best & Fairest night, Richards noted, “At that moment, I hadn’t made a decision yet… it made me lean toward Collingwood a little more.”
However, Port Adelaide’s sustained interest and a three-year contract ultimately influenced his decision to request a trade.
Having come from the Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens & Murray League, Richards was drafted by Collingwood in 2022. He is now committed to making the most of his opportunity at Port Adelaide.
Port Adelaide’s list manager, Jason Cripps, welcomed Richards, stating, “Joe is a smart footballer with great speed and forward skills, and he has significant potential for growth with more opportunities at the AFL level.” For Richards, joining Port Adelaide signifies a fresh start and a chance to leave his mark in the AFL.
