This deal entails a significant financial commitment, reaching up to $57 million, with a guaranteed sum of $38 million.

At a mere 26 years old, Onwenu has established himself as one of the most valuable offensive linemen for the New England Patriots.

In the 2023 season, he took on 850 offensive snaps, dividing his time between 194 snaps at guard and 656 at tackle, delivering convincing performances.

Pro Football Focus awarded Onwenu a commendable grade of 71.5, acknowledging his role in allowing 23 quarterback disruptions, including three crucial sacks.

Speculation had long circulated about Onwenu’s imminent substantial earnings, with anticipated annual wages ranging from $17-18 million.

The Patriots had the option to employ the franchise tag, which would have guaranteed Onwenu a salary of $20.9 million for 2024. However, they opted to apply the franchise tag to safety Kyle Dugger instead.

In an unconventional move, Onwenu chose to handle negotiations independently after parting ways with his former agency last month.

Despite the potential challenges of direct negotiations, Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf remains upbeat about the process, expressing confidence that it won’t adversely affect the team’s operations.

“It doesn’t faze us,” he remarked at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Mike is integral to our team. It’s no secret we’re keen to retain him, and while dealing directly with him might present some adjustments, Mike is astute, contemplative, and decisive. Knowing what he wants is a positive when dealing with a player. He’s undoubtedly a cornerstone for us.”

Onwenu undoubtedly brings a level of stability to the Patriots’ offensive line.

With this new agreement in place, he is set to elevate New England’s offensive line, offering fans anticipation of his contributions for at least the next three years.
