Pernell McPhee, the former defensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, has secured a new position in college football.
He will be supporting the defensive staff of the Michigan Wolverines, as recently announced. McPhee, who retired after the 2021 NFL season after a career spanning seven seasons with the Ravens and a total of 11 seasons in the league, notably notched 38 sacks as an outside linebacker.
Having played under Michigan’s current defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, from 2019 to 2021, McPhee brings valuable experience to his new role.
Matt Skura, a former starting offensive lineman for the Ravens, expressed his approval of the hiring, highlighting McPhee’s infectious personality that he believes will uplift both players and staff.
Michigan’s recent success, including their first national championship in 26 years, has been largely attributed to their exceptional defense. With McPhee joining the coaching staff, this defensive prowess is expected to continue.
McPhee’s coaching potential was recognized during his NFL career, and his addition is seen as a boon for the Wolverines.
Interestingly, McPhee’s past includes a Super Bowl victory over Jim Harbaugh, who now coaches Michigan’s football team. Harbaugh, after several years at Michigan, recently returned to the NFL as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Martindale and McPhee aim to contribute to Michigan’s quest for a consecutive national championship, a feat not achieved by a Big Ten team since Nebraska in 1994 and 1995.
