Atlanta’s quarterback depth chart is solidified with Kirk Cousins at the helm, pushing Taylor Heinicke into a backup role for now. However, Heinicke’s status as QB2 may not be secure by the start of the 2024 season.

Heinicke will face competition for the backup role, according to head coach Raheem Morris (via The Athletic’s Josh Kendall). Heinicke, who joined the team last offseason as a veteran backup option for Desmond Ridder, may not have done enough to secure the starting spot for the 2024 season. This lack of clear performance from either quarterback led to the aggressive pursuit of Cousins.

With Atlanta having limited cap space, most of which will be allocated to signing incoming rookies, signing a veteran backup like Ryan Tannehill or Carson Wentz to a one-year deal could be too costly. Therefore, the upcoming draft presents an opportunity to acquire a developmental quarterback at a lower price.

The Falcons are reportedly interested in Michael Penix Jr., with a visit lined up. However, given Atlanta’s draft position and potential focus on other positions at the No. 8 pick, Penix may not be within their reach. Despite this uncertainty, Heinicke will still need to compete with any new arrivals for the backup role during training camp.

Heinicke has one year remaining on his contract, and releasing him would result in $1.21 million in cap savings but also incur a $3.32 million dead cap charge.

Shortly after the Cousins deal, Ridder was traded to the Cardinals. The swap, which brought receiver Rondale Moore to Atlanta, provided Ridder with a fresh start after a disappointing stint as a starter. However, Ridder did not push for the trade himself, and he left the Falcons with class, according to Morris.

Ridder will now serve as the backup to Kyler Murray in Arizona, while the Falcons are expected to add another quarterback to their depth chart soon.
