Collingwood player Nathan Murphy has retired early based on medical advice following numerous concussions over his AFL career. The 24-year-old, who was part of the 2023 premiership team, endured his 10th career concussion during last year’s grand final. He was subsequently ruled out of match simulation training just before the season started in February and hasn’t played since.
After thorough discussions with the league’s medical concussion panel, it was decided that he should end his career immediately after only 57 games.
Collingwood player Nathan Murphy has been compelled to retire early due to medical advice after experiencing multiple concussions during his AFL career. The 24-year-old, who won the premiership in 2023, suffered his 10th concussion in last year’s grand final and was subsequently ruled out of match simulation training just before the season began in February, with no subsequent appearances on the field.
Following detailed consultations with the league’s medical concussion panel, the decision was made to end his career immediately after playing only 57 games.
Murphy becomes the second AFL player to retire early this year due to concussion concerns, following Angus Brayshaw of Melbourne in February.
Murphy shared the news with his teammates and staff on Tuesday morning. “I believe now is the right time and the best decision for me to retire from football,” Murphy stated. “I adore the game, but my future and health are my priorities.
I am thankful for the support from the club, coaches, teammates, staff, and the Magpie Army, and for the chance to fulfill my childhood dream of playing in the AFL. My family and friends’ unwavering love and support have been indispensable throughout this journey.
Winning a premiership with this team and club was a highlight, and I’m proud to have worn the jumper. The memories and friendships I’ve made at this great club will always be cherished.”
Murphy was selected by Collingwood with the 39th pick in the 2017 draft but faced injuries during the 2019 season. He regained fitness and played 31 games across the 2021 and 2022 seasons, culminating in a standout season last year.
