Michigan secures its initial commitment from the transfer portal…

Coach Dusty May is in the process of building his inaugural roster for the Michigan men’s basketball team, and he recently made his first move in the transfer portal by securing a commitment from Rubin Jones on Friday evening.

Jones, a former North Texas guard, announced his decision to join the Wolverines as a graduate student for the upcoming season, utilizing his additional year of eligibility.

During his time with the Mean Green last season, Jones maintained an average of 12.1 points per game across 23 games, despite being hampered by a hamstring injury. He proved to be a valuable scorer, especially from beyond the arc, where he boasted a shooting percentage of over 40%.

Considered a three-star transfer by 247, Jones adds depth to Michigan’s guard lineup and the overall roster, which is undergoing shaping. While not a direct replacement for Dug McDaniel, who now plays for Kansas State, Jones brings scoring ability that helps offset the loss of McDaniel.

With Jones’s commitment and high school recruit Justin Pippen also pledging on the same day, May seems motivated to complete his roster soon. Specifically, the Wolverines seem poised to explore further options in the transfer portal, having already found valuable guard depth in Jones.
