According to reports from Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe and Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with versatile veteran Dominic Smith. Prior to these reports, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe also suggested that Smith appeared likely to join the Red Sox.
Smith, 28 years old, is expected to offer Boston flexibility at both first base and in the outfield. Throughout his seven-year career, he has played 338 games at first base and 182 games in left field.
As a left-handed batter, Smith played for the Washington Nationals during the 2023 season, recording a .254 batting average with a .692 OPS across 527 at-bats. He achieved a career-high of 12 home runs in the same season.
Before joining the Washington Nationals, Smith played six seasons with the New York Mets, where he posted a .246 batting average and a .733 OPS.
Smith’s arrival coincides with the Boston Red Sox facing injuries across their lineup. Recently, first baseman Triston Casas was placed on the 60-day injured list due to a rib injury, while infielder Garrett Cooper, acquired by the Red Sox, exited his season debut on Tuesday night with a hand injury.
