Brisbane coach Kevin Walters has shed light on his decision-making process regarding the unexpected replacement for Adam Reynolds, with Q Cup standout Josh Rogers selected to don the No.7 jersey.

With Broncos captain Reynolds facing up to 14 weeks on the sidelines due to a torn bicep and backup half Jock Madden ruled out with a pectoral injury, Walters has expressed confidence in the rookie’s ability to step up to the challenge.

The call-up of Rogers means that Broncos five-eighth Tristan Sailor, who was brought into the Brisbane lineup earlier this season to replace the injured Reece Walsh, is the one making way.

Rogers made his NRL debut last season during the Broncos’ 32-22 loss to the Melbourne Storm.

He will partner with star playmaker Ezra Mam in the halves.

“With Ezra, we anticipate him taking on more responsibility in terms of communication and directing the team – however, Josh has been performing admirably at Burleigh,” stated the Brisbane coach.

“He just needs to execute his passes, kicks, and tackles effectively – that will be his primary role for the Broncos on Friday night.”

Rogers joined the Burleigh Bears in the Hostplus Cup in 2018 after relocating from Perth to join Brisbane’s development squad.

The 27-year-old emerged as the top point scorer in the Hostplus Cup competition in 2023 and currently leads the points tally for the 2024 season.

“So many players have transitioned through the Hostplus Cup – even within our Broncos team. I’d venture to say there are very few players in our current squad who haven’t honed their skills in that competition,” Walters remarked.

“Josh epitomizes the journey of players who have dedicated themselves for several years. He earned his NRL debut last year with us in round 27.

“There are countless players who have benefited from the competition, providing invaluable learning opportunities and experiences.”
