Despite reaching the Western Conference Semifinals, Mike Malone and Nikola Jokic were aiming for a much grander goal: winning another Larry O’Brien Trophy.
As usual, Jokic was outstanding, securing his third NBA MVP award. Throughout the season, the Nuggets received strong performances from other players, such as Jamal Murray’s clutch moments and Aaron Gordon’s playoff contributions. However, Coach Malone’s team notably lacked consistent support from the bench.
In response to the season’s disappointing end, Nuggets GM Calvin Booth aims to bolster Denver’s depth this summer and may seek the help of a former All-Star to achieve this goal.
Former All-Star Gordon Hayward was once regarded as one of the top 3-and-D players in basketball. Despite facing several injuries, his career statistics showcase his talent, with a 37% average from three-point range and averaging a steal per game.
However, his contracts have often been considered burdensome, either due to his limited availability or declining skills. Once a 21 PPG scorer, Hayward averaged only 9.8 PPG last season, though he averaged 14.7 PPG for the Charlotte Hornets the previous year.
Nowadays, Hayward is seen more as a bench player, and his contract is no longer a concern. The 34-year-old is entering free agency and, having never won an NBA Championship, is expected to prioritize signing with a contender.
This is promising for teams like the Denver Nuggets, who are reportedly very interested in the former Butler star, according to team insider Harrison Wind.
Hayward would likely be a good fit for Denver, offering valuable scoring and veteran experience off Coach Malone’s bench. If acquired at the right price, Hayward could help stabilize Denver’s bench next season without being a financial burden.
