Cubs’ Trade Secrets: Contenders Eye Players Amid Controversy

Chicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer recently suggested that the team is preparing for the future as the MLB trade deadline approaches.

Currently, the Cubs sit with a 49-55 record and are largely out of the National League playoff race, a far cry from Hoyer’s initial expectations for the season.

With the trade deadline just around the corner, several Cubs players are attracting interest from contenders. Among them are outfielder Ian Happ, second baseman Nico Hoerner, and designated hitter Mike Tauchman, with starting pitchers Jameson Taillon and Justin Steele also potentially on the market.

Jon Morosi reports that the New York Yankees might be a possible destination for either Hoerner or Tauchman. The Yankees have been linked to another potential leadoff hitter from the National League Central, indicating their search for an upgrade in this area.

Hoerner, in particular, could yield a significant return for the Cubs. Last season, he won the Gold Glove at second base. While he has struggled at the plate this year with a .257 average, he has previously demonstrated a strong offensive presence, hitting .283 with a .346 on-base percentage last season and over .300 in 2021.

As the deadline approaches, it seems prudent for the Cubs to trade some of these veteran players and focus on rebuilding for next season. While not a full-scale rebuild, acquiring prospects could be a key part of their strategy.
