With Rondale Moore out for the season due to injury, I recently suggested that the Atlanta Falcons would likely make a move rather than stick with their current roster, given Moore’s versatility as a receiver, returner, and potential runner. After their first preseason game against the Dolphins, Atlanta has indeed taken action to address the gap left by Moore’s absence by signing a dynamic receiver and return specialist.
Veteran return man Jakeem Grant is signing with the #Falcons on a one-year deal, per source.
A two-time second-team All-Pro, Grant is coming off consecutive season-ending injuries. But he’s been dynamic when he’s on the field. More speed for Atlanta. pic.twitter.com/nHOMB5iwTp

Enter Jakeem Grant, a 5’6” speedster who has twice earned second-team All-Pro honors. Once a standout returner and capable receiver, with 36 receptions for 373 yards in 2020 and six career return touchdowns (four from punts and two from kickoffs), Grant has missed the last two seasons due to injury and is now over 30. While expectations for the signing should be tempered, Grant remains an intriguing player when healthy.
The Falcons are hopeful that Grant will be healthy and able to step into the role Moore was expected to fill, likely as the team’s fourth or fifth receiver and a primary returner. Grant’s impressive punt return history provides the Falcons with multiple reliable options in that area, as well as a solid choice for the newly-revamped kick return format, where Moore was also expected to contribute. While Grant has been less productive as a receiver, his speed is undeniable—he averaged 9.4 yards after the catch per reception in 2021, the last season he played in the NFL. If Grant makes the roster, the Falcons will certainly take advantage of that speed.
Let’s give Grant a warm welcome and see if he can secure a roster spot with two preseason games remaining and the team eager to add a versatile, speedy player to replace Moore.
