Breaking News: Stunning Roster Shake-Up: Veteran Player Reinstated as Rising Star Faces Unexpected Demotion!

Aug. 10: Right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagán has been activated from the 60-day injured list and returns to the Reds’ bullpen. Pagán, who last pitched for Cincinnati on June 8 before suffering a right lat strain, has completed three rehab games at Triple-A Louisville. He previously missed time from May 23 to June 5 due to right triceps tightness. The Reds’ 40-man roster now stands at 39 players.

Aug. 10: Outfielder Jake Fraley, who had been dealing with a left ankle sprain, is back in the lineup. Fraley sustained the injury while grounding out in the top of the second inning during the series opener against Milwaukee. After briefly remaining in the game, he was replaced by Stuart Fairchild in right field before the bottom of the fourth inning. Fraley returned to play in the second game of the series on Saturday, batting eighth and manning right field.

Aug. 9: Second baseman Matt McLain’s rehab assignment has been delayed due to a recent setback in his recovery from left shoulder surgery. McLain, who was expected to start his rehab next week, is now experiencing soreness from a stress reaction in his rib cage.

Manager David Bell commented, “He’s still sore in the rib cage. We’re trying to push it as fast as we can, but he won’t begin his rehab on the 12th. It’s unfortunate that there was a setback. He was getting pretty close.”

McLain, who underwent surgery in March to repair labrum and cartilage damage in his shoulder, experienced increased soreness earlier this week while trying to increase his swing count during workouts at the team’s Arizona facility. Cincinnati had hoped he could return to contribute later in the season. Bell did not speculate on whether this setback might impact McLain’s potential return in 2024, stating, “I don’t know. All I know is he isn’t going to start on time. It’s still day-to-day. As soon as he’s out of pain, he’ll resume his rehab activities.”

10-DAY/15-DAY IL:

LHP Brent Suter (partial tear of left teres major muscle)
Estimated return: Late August
Suter, who began throwing ahead of schedule on August 2, completed a bullpen session in Milwaukee on August 9. Manager David Bell noted, “He’s getting closer. It’s been a speedy recovery.” Suter was diagnosed with a partial tear of his teres major muscle on July 20, which occurred while warming up before a game on July 19. He was initially shut down from throwing for four to six weeks.

C Austin Wynns (right teres major tear)
Estimated return: September
Wynns suffered his injury on July 28 while attempting to throw to third base against the Rays and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

60-DAY IL:

2B Matt McLain (left shoulder surgery)
Expected return: Possibly September
McLain’s rehab assignment, originally set to begin the week of August 12, has been delayed due to a stress reaction in his rib cage. Manager David Bell mentioned the situation is day-to-day, and there is no new target date for starting his rehab. McLain had been sore after trying to increase his swings during workouts at the team’s Arizona complex.

RHP Ian Gibaut (right forearm strain)
Expected return: Late August
Gibaut, who had a cortisone injection for a calf issue while recovering from his forearm strain, will need a few more days before resuming throwing. He began a throwing program in late June and threw live batting practice on July 30. The timeline for his return might be adjusted. Gibaut had surgery on May 9 for a compression issue in a forearm nerve.

RHP Graham Ashcraft (right elbow strain)
Estimated return: TBD
Ashcraft, transferred to the 60-day IL on July 29, received a PRP injection for his elbow and is not expected to start a throwing program until August 19. His July 8 option to Triple-A Louisville was canceled after elbow issues were discovered.

OF Nick Martini (left thumb sprain)
Estimated return: September
Martini underwent surgery on July 9 to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb and was moved to the 60-day IL on July 13. Although manager David Bell hopes for a September return, Martini’s availability for the rest of the season is uncertain.

1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand (right hand fracture)
Expected return: Possibly postseason
Encarnacion-Strand had surgery on July 11 to address ligament damage in his hand, with a recovery time of around three months. This makes a return during the regular season unlikely. He was diagnosed with a right ulnar styloid fracture and additional ligament damage in May.

LHP Brandon Williamson (left shoulder strain)
Expected return: September
Williamson began a throwing program and is aiming to resume mound work in bullpen sessions starting July 23. If progress continues, he could return in September. Williamson chose a non-surgical approach to treat a Bennett lesion in his shoulder, receiving injections instead of undergoing season-ending surgery.

SS Edwin Arroyo (left shoulder surgery)
Estimated return: 2025
Arroyo is out for the season after having surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder during Spring Training. The injury occurred on March 13 while diving back to first base during a game against the Giants.

RHP Tejay Antone (right elbow surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Antone was placed on the 60-day IL on April 19 following surgery on April 12 to repair tears in his ulnar collateral ligament and flexor mass tendon. The surgery was performed by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Antone, 30, has a 2.47 ERA over 45 MLB games since 2020.
