Last year, fans were surprised when Warrington’s Toby King was loaned to one of their fiercest rivals, the Wigan Warriors. However, it was an even bigger surprise for King himself as he quickly became a key player in a Warriors side that ultimately achieved Grand Final success.

RUG124-1 Toby King expressed that it will feel akin to experiencing a second debut...

King excelled in a Warriors team that claimed the title of Betfred Super League Champions in 2023, securing a memorable victory over the Catalans Dragons at Old Trafford. Additionally, he played a significant role in clinching the League Leaders’ Shield in a convincing manner.

The 27-year-old center finally found success on his third attempt, having previously experienced two Grand Final losses with Warrington, both against Wigan.

Looking back, King has expressed profound gratitude towards Wigan Warriors, acknowledging that he is “forever grateful” and holds “huge amounts of respect” for the team that supported him during challenging times.

Reflecting on his experience, King remarked, “I still pinch myself. I’m thankful to Wigan for believing in me and taking me in. The 2023 season was magnificent. I didn’t ever expect it to go as well as it did, and I loved every minute of it.”

Returning to Warrington for the 2024 season, King is focused on regaining the trust of the club’s supporters and is prepared to play a pivotal role for the team he has been a part of for nearly a decade.

Reflecting on his comeback during the off-season, King shares how he was warmly received by Warrington, though he initially had concerns about how people might perceive his return: “Initially, I wondered how they would react to me,” King admitted. ”

But I feel like I’ve seamlessly reintegrated.”

“It feels like joining a fresh club, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. There’s been a complete transformation, with many new faces. It’s invigorating, with increased energy, positivity, and smiles all around.”

“There’s a genuine enthusiasm for training among everyone.”

Furthermore, under the guidance of new Head Coach Sam Burgess, Toby King is a central figure as they aim to turn Warrington’s fortunes around in 2024.

Sam has directly expressed his appreciation for having me here.”

“Sam and the coaching staff are implementing a remarkable strategy for how they want us to perform this season. He has fostered this environment and has a clear vision for his team.”

Toby King, wearing the number 3 for the Wolves, is enthusiastic about contributing to this vision, aiming to bring the winning mindset and valuable experience he gained during his loan spells.

During his 28 appearances for Wigan last season, King ranked highly in various statistical categories, emerging as the Warriors’ leading meter-maker behind Abbas Miski. Additionally, he topped the Super League charts with an impressive total of 45 offloads.

Eager to replicate his previous success, King is resolute in leaving his mark on the Warrington team once again:

“I believe I’ve matured since my last stint here. My goal is to contribute to the backline with strength and power, taking on numerous carries, excelling in defense, and motivating the team towards victories.

“I recognize that returning from Wigan might create a somewhat challenging environment, but I fully grasp that. My aim is to demonstrate to the fans that I am here to win, to compete, and to make them proud. I aspire to once again become one of their own.”

Discussing Warrington’s aspirations and objectives for the upcoming season, King acknowledges the lofty expectations surrounding Sam Burgess’ team but emphasizes the importance of remaining grounded:

“When it comes to setting goals, it’s simple to mention the big achievements like winning the Grand Final, the Challenge Cup Final, and the League Leaders’ Shield. However, it’s the day-to-day efforts that pave the way for those accomplishments.”

Other teams will likely express similar sentiments during pre-season. However, we, as determined individuals within the club, will begin by concentrating on our on-field performance, and then we’ll proceed accordingly.

Anticipating the upcoming season, King looks forward to several aspects when he joins the Wolves on the field this year:

“I’m particularly excited about our first match, as it will feel like a second debut for me. Playing Catalans away will mark my return to wearing Warrington colors.”

“I enjoy playing alongside my brother George King; it’s always a special match. We faced off in two semi-finals last year when I was with Wigan. He won in the Challenge Cup semi-final, and then we emerged victorious in the Play-Offs semi-finals. So, it’s currently tied at one each.”

As we approach the eagerly awaited start of the Betfred Super League season next Thursday, King also remarked on the fierce competitiveness of the top tier expected in 2024, a challenge he personally relishes.

“You can visit any away venue and be uncertain about the outcome. Every game is increasingly competitive, which adds to the excitement as the result becomes unpredictable.

“There are more teams in contention, and the league is continuously improving.”

Shifting his attention back to Warrington, King made a statement aimed at reassuring the Warrington supporters:

“This year, we’ll put forth our best effort. Our goal is to construct a team that the town can take pride in, and hopefully, they’ll witness a squad that plays with passion for the badge.”
