It is no secret that the Chicago Cubs, who had a mostly disappointing and injury-plagued season, are hoping to take initiative this offseason. The Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso, who has been connected to the Cubs since spring, could be the strong bat the team needs to strengthen their lineup.
Despite having a poor season with a.240 average and a career-low.788 OPS, Alonso hit 34 home runs, which is nine more than any other Cubs player. Slightly disappointing for a hitter-friendly park like Wrigley Field, the Cubs finished 20th in the league in 2024 with a total of 170 home runs.
“If All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso does not return to the Mets, rival executives believe he will end up in Seattle or with the Cubs,” reports veteran MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Although a return to the Mets seems likely, things could be different if they are successful in their bid to acquire outfielder Juan Soto from the Yankees.
The Cubs could have a chance if the Mets sign Soto and have to let Alonso go. With a projected value of about $175 million over six years, Alonso could be an exception to the Cubs’ reluctance to commit to players of this caliber. Not only does he hit home runs, but he excels at Wrigley Field, boasting eight homers in 17 games there as a visitor, along with a.271 batting average and an OPS of 1.134. Alonso is the ideal candidate to fill the position of dependable offensive anchor for the Cubs.
