North Melbourne and Collingwood were once thought to be the top contenders for Houston, according to Cal Twomey of AFL.com. But new rumors claim that Carlton is back in the race.

Collingwood is aiming for the Suns’ Pick 13, and the Blues, who acquired Picks 12 and 14 via a trade with Hawthorn, are considering their options. Graham Wright, the newly appointed Deputy CEO of Carlton, could have a big impact on the team’s tactics in the last few days of the trade window.

The Age has learned that the Bombers’ most recent proposal calls for trading their highly valued Pick 9 to North Melbourne in exchange for the Kangaroos’ future first-round selection. They could strengthen their bid for Houston if North accepts and improves their draft position.

North’s leverage over other interested clubs, like Collingwood and Carlton, who are also trying to entice Port Adelaide, would also be increased by this tactic.

As part of their trade package for Houston, Collingwood is reportedly focused on obtaining the Suns’ Pick 13, but Melbourne and other teams are fierce competitors for the same asset.

Negotiations have become “complex and messy,” as Collingwood list manager Justin Leppitsch observed on AFL Trade Radio. He expressed worries that a single trade would jeopardize the club’s future, especially in light of Port Adelaide’s high demands.

Gold Coast may now have better offers on the table. Collingwood initially offered the Suns’ picks 13 and 23 in exchange for defender John Noble and a future first-round pick.
