Jerod Mayo is bringing in further seasoned expertise to bolster his offensive staff.

Per insider information, the Patriots are bringing on Michael McCarthy as an offensive assistant. McCarthy has dedicated the last five seasons to coaching the offensive line at Brown University.

This marks McCarthy’s return to the NFL after a six-year hiatus. Previously, he served as a quality control coach and assistant offensive line coach for the Detroit Lions during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, working alongside head coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.

McCarthy also has ties to the Patriots through his tenure in Detroit, where he was on the staff alongside Evan Rothstein. Rothstein, who served as the Patriots’ assistant quarterbacks coach last season, held a role as an offensive assistant during their shared time in Detroit.

McCarthy embarked on his career in college, initially serving as the video director at Western Michigan and later as a tight ends coach at North Carolina Central University. In 2015, he transitioned to the NFL, joining the Cleveland Browns as an offensive quality control coach.

Following his tenure with the Lions spanning two seasons, McCarthy took on the role of offensive quality control coach at Rutgers, where he focused on working with the team’s quarterbacks in 2018. The subsequent season, he became part of James Perry’s coaching staff at Brown University, serving as the team’s offensive line coach.

McCarthy is set to become a member of a freshly assembled offensive staff in New England. Thus far, Mayo has brought on board a host of new coaches to helm his offense. This roster includes Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator, T.C.

McCartney as quarterbacks coach, Scott Peters as offensive line coach, Taylor Embree as running backs coach, Ben McAdoo as senior offensive assistant, Tiquan Underwood as assistant receivers coach, andv as assistant offensive line coach.

The Patriots are currently in the process of seeking a new tight ends coach following Will Lawing’s departure to Boston College, and they are also on the lookout for a receivers coach, with uncertainty surrounding Troy Brown’s potential return.
