JUST IN: Koloamatangi discloses choice to stay with Souths…

Keaon Koloamatangi has finally disclosed the reasons behind his decision to stay with the South Sydney Rabbitohs despite receiving interest from two rival NRL clubs. Prior to agreeing to a contract extension that binds him to the red and green until the conclusion of the 2027 season, he reportedly turned down lucrative offers from the Canberra Raiders and St George Illawarra Dragons.

Ahead of his match against the Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday afternoon (Australia time), the 25-year-old forward reflected on the challenges of being a sought-after player by other clubs.

Having attended Ashfield Boys High School, Koloamatangi has accumulated 82 first-grade appearances since his debut for the Rabbitohs in Round 4 of the 2020 season, and he also made his State of Origin debut for NSW last year. “It was very difficult,” Koloamatangi expressed to The Daily Telegraph.

“It was my initial experience being in a position where I felt sought after in my career, so there were several considerations to weigh. There was speculation in the media, but I couldn’t engage with the rival clubs until November 1st, so I took care of it beforehand.”

Following his Origin debut in 2023, Koloamatangi is keen on being considered for selection once more, aiming to make an impression on new coach Michael Maguire.

Nevertheless, the enforcer and Tongan international clarified that his commitment to staying with the Rabbitohs was primarily driven by his aspiration to secure an NRL Premiership title.

Despite the arrivals of Sean Keppie (Manly Sea Eagles) and Jack Wighton (Canberra Raiders), Koloamatangi remains confident in the club’s chances of winning this season as he strives to turn his dream into reality.

“I wanted to ensure that the decision I made was thoroughly considered, leaving me with no regrets.

That’s why I opted to extend my contract with Souths for a few more years, as I genuinely believe in our potential to win,” the Rabbitohs forward emphasized.

“I believe this is the ideal environment to pursue that opportunity for victory. Ultimately, my decision was driven by the desire to win the championship and prioritize what’s best for my family, and for me, that meant staying with the Rabbitohs.”
