Boston Red Sox Pitching Puzzle: Pursuit of Jordan Montgomery Intensifies…

The Boston Red Sox still require bolstering their pitching staff before Opening Day, with one ideal addition still available in free agency.

Despite numerous connections between the Red Sox and Jordan Montgomery since the offseason commenced, the 31-year-old now seems to have several potential options on his radar.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, “Four new teams have expressed interest in Scott Boras’ clients Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery since the start of spring training.” While the Red Sox have been strongly linked to Montgomery previously, the emergence of other suitors could pose challenges for Boston.

Given Boston’s reluctance to spend heavily this offseason, if a bidding war ensues for Montgomery, the Red Sox are likely to withdraw early.

There are indications that Montgomery is becoming frustrated with Boras, and these newfound suitors might move swiftly to secure the services of the reigning World Series Champion, especially with the regular season fast approaching.

While the decrease in Montgomery’s asking price might seem advantageous for the cost-conscious Red Sox initially, the scenario may not be as favorable as it appears. If Montgomery opts for a short-term contract, his annual salary and the number of interested teams are likely to rise.

Under such circumstances, it would make more sense for Montgomery to join a contender for the season, a status the Red Sox currently lack unless their young players make significant strides.
